TMD Dysfunction and Orofacial Pain
Orofacial Pain is a broad field that encompasses the diagnosis and management of Temporomandibular Disorders, Myofascial pain in the head and neck, Primary Headaches and Neuralgias.
Temporomandibular Disorders (TMJ Disorders) are a group of conditions related to the jaw joint complex or the muscles involved in chewing and speaking. TMD can cause severe pain and a reduced ability to eat and speak, and can severely disrupt sleep. Confusingly, pain arising from one area may be felt in another, and problems in one structure may be the result of an underlying condition elsewhere.
These disorders can be very complex and multifactorial. The most important step in management of these conditions is a proper diagnosis. This requires a comprehensive exam including questionnaires, a thorough history and examination. Once a diagnosis is reached management options can be discussed. There are often a variety of treatments available. Sometimes involving other professionals including Neurologists and Physiotherapists will achieve the best results. Our approach is always to use the most conservative and non-invasive treatment which will restore comfort and function.
